SolarEdge Wants to Run AI Data Centers on 800 Volt DC Like a Giant Solar Setup

SolarEdge showed its medium voltage to 800 VDC power system for AI data centers at the OCP Global Summit with NVIDIA. It's running under load in their labs, but it's not shipping yet.

Devon Dooley / So Basically

So basically: SolarEdge, the company known for solar inverters, is showing off a power system for AI data centers at the big OCP Global Summit in San Jose this week. It takes power straight from the grid and turns it into 800 volt DC that goes right to the server racks. It’s featured in NVIDIA’s AI factory showcase. It’s working under load in their lab, but it’s not shipping yet.

Why data centers care about this

AI racks are eating crazy amounts of power now. A rack of old school servers might use like 10 or 20 kilowatts. New AI racks are heading way past 100 kW, and NVIDIA’s been talking about racks closer to a megawatt down the road.

The way power gets to a rack today is kind of a mess. It comes in as AC, gets stepped down, converted, converted again, and every step wastes some energy as heat. At these sizes, that waste turns into real money and a lot of extra cooling.

So NVIDIA has been pushing the industry toward 800 volt DC. Fewer conversions, thinner copper, less heat.

What SolarEdge built

SolarEdge is building the whole chain:

  • A solid state transformer that takes medium voltage AC from the grid
  • Turns it into 800 VDC
  • Sends it across the data center with protection and monitoring
  • All the way to the rack’s power input

They had a 3D printed model of the setup at the show. The main conversion part is running under load in their engineering labs, and they’re testing the full path from grid to rack right now.

Why a solar company

This actually makes sense. Solar panels make DC power. SolarEdge has spent about 20 years building stuff that handles DC power and keeps it safe. Data centers going DC is basically them walking into their own backyard.

It’s also a big new market for them. Solar sales have been rough for a lot of these companies. AI data centers are where the money is right now.

The catch

This is a showcase, not a product launch. No price, no customers named, no ship date in the announcement. Testing is still underway.

And SolarEdge isn’t alone. A bunch of big power companies are chasing the same 800 VDC thing because NVIDIA basically told everyone that’s where it’s going. So they’ll have to beat some really big names.

Why it matters

Everybody talks about AI needing more power plants. True. But how efficiently you move power inside the building matters too. If you can waste a few percent less on every data center, that adds up to a lot of power plants you don’t need to build.

What OCP is

OCP stands for Open Compute Project. It started at Facebook back in 2011 as a way to share data center designs openly instead of everyone keeping them secret. Now basically all the big players show up, Meta, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA and a ton of hardware companies.

The Global Summit runs October 12 to 15 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. It’s where a lot of the next gen data center stuff gets shown first, so a lot of companies are there trying to get picked by the big AI builders.

My take

This is the nerdy behind the scenes stuff but it’s important. AI isn’t just chips. It’s power, cooling, wires, all of it.

I think it’s smart for SolarEdge to jump on this. Whether they actually win any of it is another story. Show me a real data center running on it and then I’m sold.

So basically — pass it on.
