Tesla Just Showed the Cybercab in Paris. No Wheel, No Pedals
Tesla pulled the cover off a gold production Cybercab at the Paris Motor Show on Oct 12. It's the car's first public showing in Europe, but there's no European robotaxi service planned yet.
So basically: Tesla brought a real production Cybercab to the Paris Motor Show and pulled the cover off it on Monday, Oct 12, which was press day. It’s the first time the public in Europe gets to see one. No steering wheel, no pedals, gold paint, two seats. And right next to it, in a glass case, Optimus.
What happened
Tesla’s stand is in Hall 7.1, stand C25, at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Monday morning the car was already sitting there under a grey cover. Then two Tesla guys peeled it off from the nose and there it was, on a black stage with lights around it.
Videos of it went around X pretty fast. One from David Moss shows the reveal up close, another one from above shows people crowding around the stand.
The show’s director, Serge Gachot, had already told Bloomberg last week that a Cybercab from Tesla’s US fleet would be there. So this wasn’t a total surprise. But seeing it actually show up is different.
It’s not a concept
This is the important part. A lot of cars at these shows are concepts that never get built. This isn’t one of those.
It’s the same car Tesla already uses for paid rides in the US. Same gold body, same solid wheel covers, “Cybercab” written on the door. Inside there’s nothing to drive it with. No wheel, no pedals. Just seats and a screen.
You can walk around it but you can’t drive it, because, well, you can’t drive it. Tesla is doing free test drives in its other cars with FSD (Supervised) instead.
Optimus came too
Tesla put Optimus, its humanoid robot, in a glass case a few steps from the Cybercab, with red Teslas lined up behind them both. Kind of a statement. Self driving car on one side, robot on the other. That’s pretty much Tesla’s whole pitch for the next 10 years in one booth.
When can regular people see it
- Oct 12: press day, the reveal
- Oct 13 to Oct 18: open to the public
So if you’re in Paris this week you can go stand next to it.
Is it coming to Europe
Not yet. French outlet Turbo says there’s no European Cybercab service planned right now. Europe has way stricter rules on self driving than the US, so a car with no wheel can’t just start picking people up in Paris.
This is more Tesla showing off than launching anything. Right now the US is still the only place you can actually ride in one.
Why bring it at all then
Paris is packed with competition this year. Stellantis, Renault, BYD, Xpeng, Volkswagen all have big stands. Most of them are showing EVs you can buy or concepts that might come out.
Tesla showed up with a car that drives itself with nobody in the front and already carries paying people. Nobody else at the show can say that. Even if Europe can’t use it yet, it gets people talking, and it puts some pressure on European regulators too.
My take
Honestly this is mostly marketing, and it’s smart marketing. Putting a car with no steering wheel in the middle of the biggest car show in Europe gets everyone looking.
But I want to see a date for Europe, not just a car on a stage. Until the rules change over there, Paris gets to look at it and that’s it. Still, a few years ago this thing was a render. Now it’s sitting in a car show with a robot next to it.
Would you get in one with nobody in the front?
So basically — pass it on.
